BOCCE
Season runs JUNE to SEPTEMBER
Throwing balls toward a target is the oldest game known to mankind. As early as 5000 B.C. the Egyptians played a form of bocce with polished rocks. From Egypt the game made its way to Greece around 800 B.C. The Romans learned the game from the Greeks, then introduced it throughout their empire.
Dfiferent versions of this Roman game evolved over the centuries. In France, the game became known as boules. In Italy the game evolved into bocce or boccia. A different form of the sport became known in England as lawn bowls. It was thanks to European immigrants that bocce, lawn bowling and to a lesser extent boules came to flourish in North America during the twentieth century.
Bocce (pronounced boch_a), is a precision sport developed into its present form in Italy The game is traditionally played on an oyster shell court, but has also been played on decomposed granite, soil, or asphalt courts approximately 20 to 27 meters in length and 2.5 to 4 meters wide, sometimes with wooden boards of approximately 15 centimeters in height surrounding the court. Bocce balls can be made of metal, wood, stone, or various kinds of plastic. Unlike lawn bowls, bocce balls are spherical and have no inbuilt bias. This ancient game, whose modern adaptation most closely resembles bowling, requires skill, strategy and just a little luck. Bocce ball is a great game to play outside on a beautiful day. It is highly popular among seniors, but youths are sure to enjoy this accuracy game.
BOWLING
Season runs OCTOBER to APRIL
Bowling is a common game in which players attempt to score points by rolling a bowling ball along a flat surface into objects called pins. Bowling may be one of the oldest sports in the history of the world. Over 100 million people in more than 90 countries practice the game, making it one of the most popular and universally loved forms of recreation on the planet. The first standardization of the rules of the game was established on September 9, 1895 at Beethoven Hall in New York City. It was then that the American Bowling Congress was formed and major national competitions began.
The first Mineralite ball was introduced in 1914 by the Brunswick Corporation, and the first commercial installation of a pin setting machine came in 1952, making "pin boys" almost entirely unnecessary. These events along with popular broadcasts on television all added to the popularity of Bowling but make no mistake bowling is loved in its own right because it is a sport of the people. It has come from its early forms to evolve into a truly enjoyable pastime for all ages.
